Christian Bale

Christian Bale is today's #1 guy in Hollywood. He's Batman, John Connor, and soon to be crack addict boxer in The Fighter. He uses an extreme form of acting and it shows. In the Machinist Bale was able to get his weight down to 120 pounds, and at 6 feet tall this is obviously not very healthy. He has recently lost, not as much, but enough, to appear "gaunt" in the trailer for The Fighter. Other actors such as Robert De Niro, Matt Damon, and Tom Hanks have all been known to gain and lose weight for roles. I personally am torn, is this bad or good for viewers? Is it good that even Hollywood stars have a great work ethic, it shows great commitment, and it shows talent; These traits could make a good role model. Or is this bad, does it send a bad message much like when models appear emaciated? Is it different when women transform their bodies as opposed to men?

  1. I love Christian Bale! Since first seeing him in American Psycho and then Equilibrium I have been a huge fan. Years ago when I heard he was cast as Batman I thought he was a perfect fit. I can't wait to see the final installment of the franchise play out. I researched his past once for a class, did you know that he uses a different accent for every one of his roles? He also has no formal acting training. I find that aspect of his career to be appealing, like if he can do it anyone can. Well, like you said with a strong work ethic, and he is certainly dedicated to his craft. Sometimes a little too much, as evident in his onset blowout while filming Terminator Salvation. Awesome actor though haven't seen everything hes done yet but everything I have I enjoyed.

  2. I personally think it is terrible. Yes, people need to 'fit' into their role, but when you look at it through a different lense, this is telling the public that no 'ordinary joe' could take this part becuase of the way he looks, not the skills he has an actor! We have been facing for a long time media hypes about being the perfect weight and never being too skinny, well I think it's disgusting! I work with young girls ranged from 5-18. The other day I had a 7 year old come to me and say she can't have snack today becuase she is a diet, and she needs to loose weight! WHAT!? REALLY? She's 7! I was so upset, that I immediatly implimented a new curriculum about being different is OK, and everyone is different. This has seen to help her, along with a small chat with her mom. This is the problem with society, everyone thinks they need to fit into this sterotype of what is acceptable and what is not. Having actors and actresss loose and gain weight just for a movie role, is encouraging these sterotypes, and hurting our society!

Nice blog topic, couldn't help but ramble on here because this topic is something I face daily at my work. Its terrible
